देखो देखो यह गरीबी, यह गरीबी का हाल, कृष्ण के दर पे यह विशवास ले के आया हूँ। मेरे बचपन का दोस्त हैं मेरा श्याम, येही सोच कर मैं आस ले कर के आया हूँ ॥
Dekho dekho yeh gareebi, yeh gareebi ka haal, Krishna ke dar pe yeh vishwaas le ke aaya hoon. Mere bachpan ka dost hain mera Shyam, Yehi soch kar main aas le kar ke aaya hoon ॥
Look at this poverty, look at the state to which it has reduced me — and yet I have come to Krishna's door carrying nothing but faith. Shyam, the dark-hued Lord, is the friend of my childhood; holding that one thought close, I have come here bearing hope. The singer's only credential is an old friendship and the trust that it will still be honored.
अरे द्वारपालों कन्हैया से कह दो, दर पे सुदामा गरीब आ गया है। भटकते भटकते ना जाने कहाँ से, तुम्हारे महल के करीब आ गया है॥
Are dwarpaalon Kanhaiya se kah do, Dar pe Sudama gareeb aa gaya hai. Bhatakte bhatakte na jaane kahaan se, Tumhaare mahal ke kareeb aa gaya hai॥
O gatekeepers, go and tell Kanhaiya that a poor man named Sudama has arrived at his door. Wandering and wandering, from who knows what far place, he has finally come near your master's palace. (Sudama was Krishna's impoverished boyhood companion from their student days with the sage Sandipani.)
ना सर पे हैं पगड़ी, ना तन पे हैं जामा बतादो कन्हिया को नाम है सुदामा। इक बार मोहन से जाकर के कहदो, मिलने सखा बदनसीब आ गया है॥
Na sar pe hain pagdi, na tan pe hain jaama Bataa do Kanhiya ko naam hai Sudama. Ik baar Mohan se jaakar ke kah do, Milne sakha badanaseeb aa gaya hai॥
There is no turban on his head, no proper garment on his body — just tell Kanhaiya that his name is Sudama. Go once to Mohan, the enchanter of hearts, and tell him that a luckless friend has come to meet him. The verse lingers on the beggarly appearance precisely because the name alone should be enough.
सुनते ही दोड़े चले आये मोहन, लगाया गले से सुदामा को मोहन। हुआ रुकमनी को बहुत ही अचम्भा, यह मेहमान कैसा अजीब आ गया है॥
Sunte hi daude chale aaye Mohan, Lagaaya gale se Sudama ko Mohan. Hua Rukmani ko bahut hi achambha, Yeh mehmaan kaisa ajeeb aa gaya hai॥
The moment he heard, Mohan came running, and clasped Sudama to his chest. Rukmini, his queen, was astonished at the sight — what strange sort of guest is this, that the Lord of Dwarka should run to embrace him? Her bewilderment measures the gap between Sudama's rags and the welcome he receives.
और बराबर पे अपने सुदामा बिठाये, चरण आंसुओं से श्याम ने धुलाये। न घबराओ प्यारे जरा तुम सुदामा, ख़ुशी का समा तेरे करीब आ गया है॥
Aur baraabar pe apne Sudama bithaaye, Charan aansuon se Shyam ne dhulaaye. Na ghabraao pyaare zara tum Sudama, Khushi ka samaa tere kareeb aa gaya hai॥
Krishna seated Sudama as an equal, right beside himself, and washed his feet with his own tears. Do not be anxious in the least, dear Sudama, he says — the season of joy has drawn near to you at last. Washing a guest's feet is the traditional honor given to the revered; that Krishna does it with tears, and seats a beggar as his peer, overturns every rule of rank.
